Aerostream Mk1

Aerostream Mk1 is my first gravity kart that we built. This project took us around 6 months to build. I decided on the name because I wanted to build a quick gravity kart and I was focusing on aerodynamics. So the name comes from aerodynamics and streamline combined to make 'Aerostream'.

My Vision

My vision when designing and building Aerostream Mk1 was to make it as aerodynamic as possible within the regulations. However, with this first gravity kart I was limited as to how much I could customise as the whole build came together from parts that were originally designed for a different purpose. This is why I now want to design a new gravity kart from the ground up.

Build Story

The build started off using two KMX kids trikes that would form our front and rear axle. It was a lot easier to source the wheels and axles from another item than have to create our own from scratch. We then had to join our axles together with a piece of steel box section and add a wooden floor to give us a rolling chassis. From this solid floor the rest of the chassis was made out of plywood.

Bodywork

I was fortunate enough to be offered a free velomobile body to use for the gravity kart. This was a great start but still needed some modifications. We had to modify the front as the wheels sat outside the original body, reduce the length so it could be transported and also reduce the height to make it more streamlined. Adding all these modifications to the body did compromise its strength. For the new gravity kart the body will be designed from scratch so it can be made as one to increase the strength.
