Richards Castle 2024

This was our third time back attending Richards Castle and it is always a great race to look forward to with a technically challenging course. This was the first time I had ran this new kart so I used it as a bit of a testing day to see how it compared to last year. For the type of track it is we were very pleased with the design of our new kart as I was able to continue running back onto the track with no damage after having a slight detour onto the grass bank.

However, one change we knew we wanted to make straight away was the stiffness of our suspension. We were running the ‘Medium’ strength springs and even with the bumpiness of Richards Castle, including the infamous cattle grid, they were too stiff for what we needed. After this race, we did some more research into the rating of springs as well as placement of springs. To find out more about how we changed our suspension, check the ‘Welton Soapbox Derby 2024’ blog post.

Overall, I managed to get the fastest junior run of the day, although the results are taken from your two fastest runs combined so I came away with P2 in the juniors. We also got rewarded the ‘Best turned out team’ award. This was still a great achievement for us considering we did not know what to expect from the brand new kart.

If you wish to see any of my onboard videos they are all uploaded for Richards Castle on my Instagram, which can be found by clicking the logo at the bottom of this page or by searching 'aerostreamracing'.
